+---------------------------------------------------------+ | Updated state of the PMIP database as of May 22nd 97 | | + | | Comprehensive description of the reported and corrected | | problems since the base was created | +---------------------------------------------------------+ WARNING : the database can only be accessed by groups who have contributed results. Other groups should ask Sylvie Joussaume or Karl Taylor to grant them access. You will find below, for each model, the list of changes and patches applied to the variables *BEFORE May 22nd 97* (and since February 96). IF YOU HAVE DOWNLOADED DATA FROM THE BASE BEFORE THIS DATE, we strongly advise you to read this mail thoroughly and GET THE UPDATED VARIABLES!!! Updated state of the PMIP database as of May 22nd 97 ==================================================== Detail of the available data : Number of variables MODEL 0cal 0fix 6fix 21cal 21fix bmrc 282 282 ccc2.0 232 231 ccm1 217 217 ccm3 211 210 ccsr1 277 276 277 cnrm-2 225 222 csiro 246 245 echam3 226 224 225 gen1 193 193 gen2 242 242 237 242 227 giss-iip 158 157 lmcelmd4 187 186 185 lmcelmd5 193 192 191 mri2 283 282 283 ugamp 252 252 251 252 255 uiuc11 270 272 ukmo 151 256 255 151 yonu 248 and lln_nh_1 40 Size of the binary part of the base (in Kbytes) : 1383385 Binary or, more precisely 143149 0cal 436416 0fix 143036 21cal 203535 21fix 457248 6fix From now on, we will send a monthly update of what has changed in the database (if something has changed). The update will be sent to everyone registered in the PMIP subprojects mailing lists and will be available in the /pub/pmip directory on yoda.llnl.gov. You will also be able to access it on the PMIP web page (currently under construction). No existing variable will be changed in the base until two or three days before we send you a mail with the new state of the database. Notes about the base .................... We have found it useful to introduce a new PMIP variable (this is an update of the description of the required variables given in Newsletter #6) : rss W/(m^2) Net Surface Shortwave Radiation + down We decided this since rsds and rsus were not available separately in some models. We have computed this variable in the database for all the models that had rsds and rsus. Anyone using the the ASCII part of the database should inform us. If it appears that people are only using the ".nc" netCDF files, we may remove the ASCII part of the base. All you need to know about the netCDF data format may be found at http://www.unidata.ucar.edu/packages/netcdf We suggest that you use the following program and library to study and access PMIP data : VCS : http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/software/vcs/ EzGet : http://www-pcmdi.llnl.gov/software/ezget Reported and corrected problems ............................... We have run some quality control tests (described at the end of this mail) on boundary conditions variables and have spotted some obvious problems but there is still a good chance that erroneous variables remain in the base. Very few people have worked with the variances, for instance, and we can't tell you how reliable they are. When you find something wrong, please let us know about it by sending email to : jypeter (NEW! Please check the PMIP 'Contacts' web page) or paleo (NEW! Please check the PMIP 'Contacts' web page) The changes applied to the binary part of the base have also been applied to the ASCII part. If you find something inconsistent between the two parts, you should let us know, and temporarily assume the binary version is correct. MAJOR changes ============= Several data sets sent to our database were *NOT* PMIP simulations (usually due to boundary conditions problems). Read this section and the next one to determine if you have retrieved data sets that are flawed. bmrc ---- * bmrc data were correct but on the wrong grid. The grid has been corrected. GET THE NEW FIELDS! ccm2 ---- * ccm2 has been completely REMOVED from the base and replaced by ccm3. DO NOT USE CCM2 ANY LONGER! ccm3 ---- * ccm3_6fix is FLAWED and will soon be updated. DO NOT USE IT until the new fields are available! cnrm ---- * cnrm has been completely REMOVED from the base and replaced by cnrm-2. USE ONLY CNRM-2! echam3 ------ * echam3_0fix was rerun and REPLACED, due to a mistake in the insolation. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY HAVE THE NEW FIELDS! gen2 ---- * Some old gen2 data was labeled as 'cal'(culated) when it should have been 'fix'(ed). USE ONLY FIX FIELDS! giss-iip -------- * giss-iip_0fix and giss-iip_6fix were rerun and REPLACED. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY HAVE THE NEW FIELDS! * giss-iip_21fix has been completely removed and will be updated. DO NOT USE IT until the new fields are available! ugamp ----- * ugamp_21fix was rerun and REPLACED. MAKE SURE YOU ONLY HAVE THE NEW FIELDS! yonu ---- * yonu_0fix has been completely REMOVED and will soon be updated. DO NOT USE IT until the new fields are available! Other errors and changes ======================== If an error in YOUR model is mentioned below and we have not gotten in touch with you about it, it means that we should be able to take care of the problem ourselves... when we have time. You are nonetheless welcome to confirm the error, tell us if other similar variables may also be wrong, and send us updated/corrected data! ccc2.0 ------ !! The sign of ccc2*tau[u,v] is wrong. ccm1 ---- * sftland has been corrected (their was a shift of 180 degrees in the longitudes of the original files). !! The sign of ccm1*tau[u,v] is wrong. ccm3 ---- * sftland has been corrected (their was a shift of 180 degrees in the longitudes of the original files). !! The sign of ccm3*tau[u,v] is wrong. ccsr1 ----- * ccsr1_21fix_[sftland, orog, seaice, sim] has been corrected (it was originally the same as 0fix), but the other variables were OK. csiro ----- echam3 ------ * The echam3_[0,6,21]fix_README files have been updated. * echam3_*_rsds_*_map has been corrected. 'rss' had been supplied instead of 'rsds'. gen1 ---- !! For all fields the grid is shifted east by half a grid cell (3.75 degrees) and is therefore incorrect. gen2 ---- * sftland has been corrected (their was a shift of 180 degrees in the longitudes of the original files). !! Some gen2*sftland* points have very small values when they should have a 0.0 value over the ocean. * The gen2 model has 2 groups of variables defined on two different grids (AGCM = 3.75 Degrees, or 96x48), thus requiring 2 distinct sets of sftland files AGCM grid : T31, 3.75 Degrees, or 96x48 gen2_*_sftland_*_map variables = orog, sftland, rsdt, rsut, rlt, rsds, rsus, rls, hfss, hfls, pr, prc, evs, pmsl, usfc, vsfc, hursfc, clt, rltcs, rstcs, rlscs, prw, zg, ta, u, v, hus, hur LSX grid : 2 degrees, or 180*90 gen2_*_sftlandT31_*_map variables = snow, seaice, sim, snm, mrro, tas, tg, tauu, tauv !! All the AGCM variables are shifted 1.875 degrees west, and the LSX variables are shifted 1. degree west. mri2 ---- * The mri2_*_rsds_* files have been renamed to mri2_*_rss_*. !! Problems with mri2_*_sftland_* ???? !! The sign of mri2*tau[u,v] is wrong. ugamp ----- * ugamp_*_snm_map has been corrected. uiuc11 ------ !! The grid of uiuc11_0fix_orog_ca_map is wrong. ukmo ---- * Variances were updated. Quality control tests ===================== Neither all the models nor all the variables were checked. We intend to keep on testing the data as we use it. We have, for instance, noticed that annual, seasonal and monthly means were not always consistent and we will run some comprehensive tests to eliminate this kind of error. Tests for 6fix .............. * insolation change. * check that there is no surface temperature difference over the ocean between 6fix and 0fix. * check that the land-sea mask is correct. Tests for 21fix ............... * insolation change. * check that the differences in SST for January and July, are the ones expected from CLIMAP. It is however difficult to check this in detail because the interpolation method may vary from one group to another. * check that the land-sea mask is correct. * check the changes in orography . We also intend to : * search for errors in rsds and rsus by computing the albedo for the two periods. * check that the annual, seasonal and monthly means are consistent.
