PALEOCLIMATE MODELING INTERCOMPARISON PROJECT
*********************************************
Workshop Annoucement / No. 1
----------------------------
8 February 1995
Dear PMIP participant,
We are pleased to announce that the first PMIP workshop for discussing
model results has been scheduled for October 1 - 6, 1995 (arrival Sunday 1
departure Friday 6) in Collonges-la-Rouge (near Brive) France, one of the most
famous old villages of France, just nearby the Perigord region, where we
plan an afternoon visit to the Lascaux prehistoric paintings (an excellent
copy of them, the orignal ones being closed).
The purpose of the workshop is to share results obtained by the
participating modeling groups for the 21 ka and 6 ka PMIP simulations
and to begin exploring model differences. We envision that special
common interests will draw together groups of participants into
specific sub-projects which will focus on various aspects of the
simulations. We shall also initiate planning for systematic
comparisons with paleoclimate data.
As a person who has been active in PMIP, you are invited to attend this
workshop and contribute in as many ways as you can to make it
successful. We have tentatively reserved housing at "Le Val", a center
for seminars and family vacations, in Collonges. We have obtained
funding from the European Union and NOAA, to help defray the costs of
the meeting. (We thank P. Valdes, J. Mitchell, K. Herterich
and S. Harisson for their help in writing the EU proposal
and Robert Webb, Tony Broccoli and John Kutzbach for their help
in writing the NOAA proposal.) We will eat most
meals together in a common dining room and housing will be in small
houses nearby. We also have reserved meeting rooms.
Our aim is to limit the workshop to no more than 45 participants in order
to allow informal discussions of PMIP results. Our
travel funds are also tight, so initially we are only inviting 1
participant from each PMIP modeling group (along with our advisory
committee and paleoclimate data subcommittee). If you think it
important that someone else in your group also be invited, please let
us know immediately. If you cannot attend, but your group expects to
have some results by the time of the workshop, please suggest an
alternate representative from your group.
We are confident that we have enough funding to cover the expenses of
each person (or alternate representative) invited through this
announcement (APEX air fares and lodging), but we may not be able
to cover the full expenses of 45 participants. Please let us
know if you have independent funding that might help defray
your costs. We may require groups who wish to send
more than one representative to do so at their own
expense.
We must make a firm commitment as to how large our group will be
by Feb.24. THEREFORE PLEASE REPLY IMMEDIATELY, BEFORE FEB. 18
BY E-MAIL INDICATING WHETHER OR NOT YOU PLAN TO ATTEND
AND IF YOU WILL BE ACCOMPANIED BY YOUR SPOUSE (local costs about
400 FF /day/person).
Also let us know immediately whether you would like to invite anyone
else not on our initial list (see below). If you no longer are
interested in PMIP or have no plans to do the PMIP experiments,
let us know so we can revise our list of PMIP participants.
Sincerely yours,
Sylvie Joussaume and Karl Taylor
PMIP Coordinators
