               PALEOCLIMATE MODELING INTERCOMPARISON PROJECT
               *********************************************

                       Workshop letter / No. 4
                       ------------------------
                          15 September 1995

Dear PMIP Participants :

We send you a final letter before the workshop with some more
information and a last call to collect atlases and data.

LAST CALL
**********

Indeed, we remind you that to work on model-model comparisons during
the workshop, it is important and necessary for you to provide the
LMCE with atlases of your model output. Please send the postscript
files to the anonymous ftp on
<computer_does_not_exist_any_longer>.fr, before the
deadline of : September 25, 1995.

If you cannot provide the necessary plots by that date, please try to
bring them with you to the conference.

The following models' atlases have been provided at this time :
lmcelmd4, lmcelmd5, ugamp, ukmo, echam3, csiro9, gfdl. Also some groups
have now deposited their PMIP data at PCMDI, and PCMDI is generating
the atlases for those groups (mri, ccm2, ccm1, Genesis 2, Genesis 1).
If you provide data in the specified format to PCMDI by September 22,
they will try to produce an atlas for you. A few bugs have been
discovered in the wrtascii.f subroutine that you will use to put your
data in the correct format for transfer to PCMDI. These have been
corrected, but you should be sure to obtain the latest version of this
subroutine from the anonymous ftp at PCMDI as explained in PMIP
Newsletter 6.

WORKSHOP PROGRAMME
******************

As we already explained in the workshop newsletter 2, the main goals of
the workshop are to :

* share results from the PMIP simulations in order to identify common
responses, discover where disagreement among models is large, get an
idea of the range of responses, and identify in individual models any
unusual or extreme responses that might warrant further investigation.

*identify issues of common interest and form subprojects for further
study.

* share methodologies and approaches for analysis and diagnosis of
paleoclimate simulations and propose (or demonstrate) strategies for
intercomparison of model results and comparison of results to
observations.

A few talks have been planned to stimulate discussion and inspire
subprojects. They concern preliminary attempts to intercompare PMIP
model results, and/or descriptions of specific methodologies or special
diagnostics useful for analyzing results, as well as overviews of the
availability and quality of the paleoclimate data for the periods.

Talks are planned for about 30 mns. We will try to keep the workshop relatively informal. Some other shorter talks would thus be welcome if they fit the above goals of the workshop. Please tell us as soon as possible.

You are also encouraged to bring overheads of your own results, as well as any other charts (paper copy) you think may complement the atlas (such as boundary conditions on your model resolution, zonal means ...) in order to help informal discussions during the workshop.
